Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt

Purchase this book on Amazon here! Fish in a Tree is a New York Times bestselling middle grade novel by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Ally is extremely smart. For most of her school career, she's been acting out in class to hide the fact that she can't read. But when she meets Mr. Daniels, he's able to see past her harsh exterior to the intelligent and creative individual underneath. Fish in a Tree is a heartwarming book about dyslexia and how great an impact teachers can make when they show that they truly care. Sex: None. Language: None. Drug/Alcohol Use: None. Violence/Gore/Frightening Scenes/Death: None. Final Note: I strongly believe that this book should be required reading for both teachers and students alike. Lynda Mullaly Hunt did a fantastic job showing what it's like to struggle with a learning disability and how teachers have the power to really make a difference in a student's life.

The Black Pearl by Scott O'Dell

Purchase this book on Amazon here! The Black Pearl is a middle grade fiction novel by Scott O'Dell. It won a Newbery Honor in 1967. Ramon has always followed in his father's footsteps. Now he's sixteen years old and learning all about the pearl business. His dream is to find the biggest pearl of all. But when his dreams seem to come true, disaster strikes.  Sex: None. Language: None. Drug/Alcohol Use: None. Violence/Gore/Frightening Scenes/Death: There are several deaths. Ramon is threatened with violence by another character. There are also a couple of suspenseful scenes with sea creatures.  Final Note: I've been working my way through the Newbery winners and honor books for several years now. I've come to find that age doesn't matter. A lot of these Newbery books, no matter how old, are still absolutely wonderful. This book was a quick read but still full of adventure. If young and middle grade readers can look past the old cover, I...

Gooney Bird Greene Series by Lois Lowry

Gooney Bird Greene is a junior fiction series by Newbery Award winning author Lois Lowry. (Number the Stars and The Giver.) Gooney Bird Greene is full of ideas. She loves being a unique individual. This series is all about her adventures in second grade. Sex: None. Language: None. Mild potty humor like you would typically hear from second graders. Drug/Alcohol Use: A classmate remarks that his dad smokes. A wine glass is set out for a display but when a parent complains, it's removed. Violence/Gore/Frightening Scenes/Death: None. Final Note: This series is truly wonderful. It's like an early Junie B. Jones, but with more challenging vocabulary. Gooney Bird is quite smart and her teacher fosters her uniqueness. If you can get your daughters to pick these up, I don't think they'll put them down. ***There are a few other titles in this series, but these are the three I've read most recently.

Kid Owner by Tim Green

Purchase this book on Amazon here!   Kid Owner is a middle grade fiction novel by New York Times Bestselling Author Tim Green. When Ryan finds out that the dad he never knew has died, he isn't quite sure how to feel. But just a few days later, Ryan gets the shock of his life. Not only did his dad love football as much as he does, but he also owned the Dallas Cowboys and left his ownership of the team to Ryan. Will Ryan get to keep the team? Will it make a difference for his own middle school football career? Sex: None. Language: None. Drug/Alcohol Use: Brief mention of beer. Violence/Gore/Frightening Scenes/Death: Some bullying. Final Note: Another great book by Tim Green. Most boys wonder what it would be like to play for the NFL. What would it be like to actually own your own team? Tim Green's books for middle grade readers are really great reads for young boys. Even for kids who aren't into sports, these books are still enjoyable.
